A Registered Social Security Analyst® (RSSA®) is a professional with specialized education in Social Security planning. RSSAs are trained to understand the rules, benefits, and claiming decisions that can affect how much Social Security an individual or family may receive.
Their role is to take a subject that can feel complicated and make it easier to understand, helping you see the options available based on your own work history, family circumstances, and retirement plans.
Specialized Social Security Training
Becoming an RSSA® requires more than a basic understanding of Social Security.
RSSA candidates complete a five-module education program covering Social Security rules, benefit calculations, claiming strategies, family and survivor benefits, disability, Medicare, taxation, and other situations that may affect retirement benefits.
Each module includes an assessment, and candidates must successfully complete the full program before they are eligible to take the RSSA® Final Exam.
Tested on More Than the Basics
After completing their education, RSSA candidates must pass a proctored competency exam designed to test both what they know and how they apply that knowledge.
The exam includes knowledge-based questions as well as real-life planning scenarios that require candidates to evaluate Social Security options and work through different claiming situations.
This helps ensure that earning the RSSA® credential represents demonstrated knowledge rather than simply completing a course.
Social Security Is Personal
There is no single Social Security strategy that works for everyone.
When you claim is important, but it is only one part of the picture. Your work history, earnings, marriage, divorce, dependents, survivor benefits, pensions, disability, and other circumstances may all affect the benefits available to you or your family.
An RSSA® looks at those pieces together, helping you understand how Social Security applies to your individual situation rather than relying on general rules alone.
What Can an RSSA® Help You Understand?
An RSSA® can help answer questions such as:
- When could it make sense to claim Social Security?
- How could claiming earlier or later affect my benefits?
- Could my spouse or children qualify for benefits?
- Could I qualify for benefits based on an ex-spouse’s work history?
- How do survivor benefits work?
- How could continuing to work affect my Social Security?
- How does my earnings history influence my benefits?
- How might a pension or other retirement income affect my situation?
- What Social Security options should I understand before making a decision?
The goal is to give you a clearer understanding of the choices available so you can make a more informed decision about your Social Security.
Personalized Analysis With RSSA Roadmap®
RSSAs also have access to RSSA Roadmap®, Social Security planning software designed to analyze an individual’s circumstances and compare different claiming scenarios.
Rather than looking at one claiming age in isolation, the software can account for factors such as earnings history, marital status, dependents, pensions, disability, and life expectancy to help illustrate how different decisions may affect Social Security benefits.
Your RSSA® can then walk through the results with you, explain what they mean, and help make the different options easier to compare.
Guidance From a Real Person
Software can provide valuable information, but Social Security decisions often bring questions that numbers alone cannot answer.
Working with an RSSA® gives you someone who can explain the analysis, answer questions, and help you understand why one option may look different from another.
That personal guidance can be especially helpful when family circumstances, work plans, or other factors make a Social Security decision more complicated.
Ongoing Education
Social Security rules, benefit amounts, and planning considerations can change over time.
RSSAs have ongoing continuing education requirements designed to help them maintain and expand their Social Security knowledge after earning the credential.
This ongoing education helps support the level of knowledge associated with the RSSA® designation.
Understand Your Options With More Confidence
Social Security may provide income for decades of retirement, and the decisions surrounding your benefits can have a lasting impact.
An RSSA® gives you access to specialized Social Security knowledge, personalized analysis, and someone who can help explain how the rules apply to your circumstances.
The goal is not to make the decision for you. It is to give you the information and understanding you need to make a more confident decision for yourself.
